Signed in the plate.

In all probability Picasso prepared a drawing for this subject, which was then transferred by photogravure to a zinc plate, which has the same properties as linoleum for printing. Picasso had not yet started to cut lino blocks for posters; his Toros Vallauris 1954 poster was the first of the Vallauris posters for which Picasso actually cut the blocks.

Printed in black on a paper which had been manufactured with stripes of colour. This type of paper was sometimes used for commercial posters and flyers in the 1950s, and Picasso was obviously attracted by its lively character.

Some impressions of this subject were printed on small format paper (68 x 52 cm), others on larger format paper (81 x 59 cm), Czwiklitzer records impressions in both sizes.

According to Czwiklitzer the edition was as many as 2000, but as the subject is now exceptionally rare, it seems likely that there were far fewer impressions,
printed and released. Our impression therefore is very scarce, especially with such exceptional fresh colours.
